For centuries, bathtub making dominated economic life in Emsdetten. The Tub-Making Museum was opened in 1985 and has been showcasing the history of this ancient craft ever since. But what is actually meant by tubs? Tubs were flat baskets woven from willow, which were used in agriculture to clean grain. The threshed grain was cleaned of dirt and dust by jerking it around in the tub.

In addition to the tubs, there are several furnished rooms on display that illustrate how the house was used at the time and how the tub makers lived and worked. An exhibition area organised by theme provides background information on the development of the tub-making trade in Emsdetten.

The museum is located on the museum island at Hof Deitmar near the centre of Emsdetten. In addition to the Tub Makers' Museum, it also houses theAugust Dutch Museumas well as the granary museum and a bakehouse.

• The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday at the times indicated. Other opening hours apply on public holidays.
