The municipality of Saerbeck is close to nature, traditional and nevertheless peppered with some of the region's highlights. Nestled in the beautiful Münsterland park landscape, the NRW climate community of Saerbeck is a well-known business location, not least due to the bioenergy park, a strong, historically influenced agriculture and the large industrial estate. In addition, the municipality of 7100 inhabitants in the district of Steinfurt is characterised by little insider tips: the Calzavara ice cream café, but also a walk through the wildlife enclosure as well as a visit to the Waldsee lake are at the top of the list for connoisseurs of the municipality. The town centre itself offers both locals and visitors a high quality of life: modern grocery shops, textile and drug stores as well as Westphalian and international restaurants and cafés and a wide range of cultural and sporting activities. Saerbeck's good infrastructure makes it easy to get to anywhere in the world: by car it is only 15 minutes to FMO airport or 30 minutes to our Dutch neighbours in beautiful Enschede. If you prefer more natural surroundings, you can go on a day trip along the beautiful themed routes in the region - for example to Münster, 30 kilometres away.
HistoryWhere the municipality of Saerbeck is now located, the oldest archaeological finds point to human traces from more than 11,000 years ago. Signs of the first permanent settlements date back to the Neolithic period. During the construction of the B219 bypass, further exciting relics were uncovered: more than 50 urn burials, many of them with bronze grave goods, were recovered from this grave site, which is around three thousand years old.
The first written record from the year 1100 mentions the farm "sarbikie Hoio", which had to deliver taxes in kind to Freckenhorst Abbey. In an imperial document from the year 1122, the ownership of the "curtis sorbecke", the upper court of Saerbeck, is confirmed to Cappenberg Abbey. In another document in 1161, the church is named for the first time, which became the centre of the village settlement. This became a parish, which united the village and the surrounding farming communities. In the 15th century there were about 700 inhabitants. Until the 19th century, wars and changes of power between bishoprics, nobility, counties and bishops led to different local lords. Catastrophic natural events also left their mark on the community of Saerbeck, whose inhabitants and farmers had always relied on agriculture. In the 20th century, population growth and industrialisation brought economic prosperity, so that even landscape and nature conservation gained in importance. Affiliated with the district of Steinfurt on 1 January 1975, Saerbeck ceded its inhabitants and land area to the neighbouring towns of Emsdetten, Greven, Ladbergen and Tecklenburg in the course of municipal reorganisation.
