The "Holy Sea" in Hopsten is a nature reserve covering around 260 hectares. Over the course of thousands of years, a chain of sinkhole lakes was created by the collapse of underground salt domes. As early as between 600 B.C. and 900 A.D., the Great Sacred Sea was formed, which today is the largest natural still water body in North Rhine-Westphalia. As late as the beginning of the 20th century, eyewitnesses reported the formation of new sinkhole lakes. An impressive natural experience in the northern Münsterland.

The area is accessible all year round and can be explored on circular hiking trails. From the end of March to the end of October, the LWL Museum of Natural History offers a free exhibition on the history of the formation of the sinkhole lakes, the habitats and the flora and fauna in the nature reserve.
