Recker Moor nature reserve

Recke

The Recker Moor offers a special kind of nature experience. It is considered one of the last living raised bogs in Germany and is home to numerous animal and plant species. Two observation towers provide a good overview of the 344-hectare nature reserve. Information boards provide guests with exciting information about the moor and the unique landscape can be explored up close on a hiking trail over the peat dam.

History

The Recker Moor was formed around 6,000 BC. Today it consists of an area of about 150 hectares. They represent the remaining area of the former Vinter Moor, which originally covered an area of 5,000 hectares.

In the 18th century, plaggen and peat cutting began in the bog. Drainage, peat cutting and reclamation have led to the disappearance of almost all the bog areas.

Extensive rewetting measures in the 1970s created the conditions for the development of conditions typical of raised bogs.

Today, the Recker Moor is part of the EU bird sanctuary Düsterdieker Niederung and thus part of the European protected area network NATURA 2000.
