Lotte
Between the foothills of the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehen Mountains, in the midst of the natural and cultural landscape of the Tecklenburger Land, lies the small dynamic town of Lotte. The gently rolling, wooded landscape characterised by meadows and fields is particularly attractive for leisure activities such as hiking, Nordic walking and cycling. Churches, mills and old farmsteads as well as the Large and Small Sloopstones are waiting to be discovered.
HistoryThe area of the municipality of Lotte was still the area of the Funnel Beaker Culture in Neolithic times. Large stone graves near Wersen still point to the first inhabitants of the area.
The history of the village of Lotte then begins in the Middle Ages. Today's Alt-Lotte still belonged to the parish of St. Marien Osnabrück and the Osterberg farming community to Leeden. Osterberg was first mentioned in a document in 1251. Count Otto III of Tecklenburg founded the parish of Lotte in 1312. The consecration took place on 4 December 1315. This event marked the end of its affiliation to the parish of St. Mary.
The Osterberg estate was sold in 1410 for the establishment of a men's monastery of the Friars Minor. As this was not viable in the long run, it was handed over to the General Chapter of the Knights of the Cross in 1427.
For 200 years the monastery played an important role for the community until a dispute arose between the monastery and Count Konrad von Tecklenburg, who converted to the Protestant faith. The canons tried to resist the will of Konrad von Tecklenburg until they were finally expelled in 1538. After the death of Count Konrad in 1557, the canons returned to their rightful monastery.
In 1574 the Reformation was introduced in Lotte and the first school was built only six years later.
The monastery was placed under secular administration by Count Adolf von Tecklenburg in 1618. 11 years later Emperor Ferdinand decreed the return of all confiscated property and monasteries to the Catholic Church. A little later (1633), the monastery was occupied by troops from Sweden in the course of the Thirty Years' War. The canons then left the monastery for good.
In 1810 the first mayoralty was introduced in Lotte. On 6 December 1844 the municipalities of Lotte and Wersen were merged.
Today's municipality of Lotte includes the districts of Alt-Lotte, Büren, Halen, Osterberg and Wersen.
