Kannegießerhaus Rheine

Rheine

The Kannegießerhaus is one of the oldest preserved town houses in Rheine and dates back to the 15th century. The Kannegiesser family was quite respected and provided several mayors in the city of Rheine in the past centuries.

History information

The Kannegießerhaus was built in the 15th century above the oldest town moat near St. Dynosius Church. It is a stately burgher's house that was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the house was inhabited by the Kannegiesser family, which gives its name to the magnificent building. The Kannegiesser family was a respected family that provided several mayors of the city of Rheine between 1576 and 1680.

The building served as a wine shop for about a century until it was bought by the city of Rheine in 1982 in the course of the city's redevelopment. The Kannegiesserhaus then housed the town archives until 2007. It then moved to the new town hall together with the town library.

The Kannegießerhaus is now used as a facility for the educational service.
