House Marck
Tecklenburg
Haus Marck is located below the town of Tecklenburg in the immediate vicinity of the Teutoburg Forest. The single-storey moated castle is surrounded by a historic moat system and dates from the second half of the 16th century. In 1643, Haus Marck was the site of negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia. Today the building is privately owned and inhabited. Castle concerts, readings and wedding ceremonies are held irregularly in the historic rooms.
The Marck House is not open to the public. From April to October, guided tours are offered on Saturdays at 10 and 11 am. Group tours are possible by prior arrangement. A tour of the grounds and park is possible at any time.
History informationAs feudatories, the Lords of Horne had probably been on the Marck estate since 1198. In 1368, the property is mentioned in a document: the von Horne family wanted to start building a house here.
With the marriage of the heiress's daughter Gertrude von Horne to the mercenary leader Georg von Holle in 1537, the previously single-storey complex underwent substantial alterations and the manor house was extended in the Weser Renaissance style. The present appearance of the closed, four-winged complex originates mainly from the rebuilding in 1754 in the style of the late Baroque.
The moated castle played an important role in the negotiations of the Peace of Westphalia, as in 1643 the preliminary negotiations for the peace treaties signed in Münster and Osnabrück on 24 October 1648 took place.
Since 1804, the manor house has been owned by the Baron von Diepenbroick-Grüter family - who still occupy the house today and whose privacy should be respected.
In addition to registered guided tours, concerts, readings, seminars and events are organised. The theatre at the castle is particularly popular with younger visitors. The Knights' Hall and the Remise can be hired for events. The premises of Haus Marck are also used as a branch of the Tecklenburg registry office.
