The Wadhügel is one of the most species-rich nature reserves in North Rhine-Westphalia and, at 94 m above sea level, the highest elevation in the Rheine urban area. The area impressively illustrates the conflict between lime mining and nature conservation, as the coveted raw material is still being extracted here today. In the northern part of the area, mining has already been completed and nature has regained its habitat. The steep slopes and turquoise-blue lakes make the nature reserve a special experience. Several circular walks offer wonderful views of the beautiful plants, grazing moorland sheep and the turquoise Waldhügelsee lake.
