The magnificent town church is located in the middle of the historic town centre of Lengerich, near the town hall square. The Protestant town church in its present form, as a Westphalian hall church, dates from the 14th/15th century and delights every guest with its late Gothic elements.

The present Westphalian hall church with late Gothic style elements dates from the 14th or late 15th century. However, there were probably three other churches in Lengerich before that. A first one was probably built between the 9th and 11th centuries, on the property of the ladies' convent of Herford. A second church, built of stone, dates from the second half of the 12th century. A third church was built on the same site in the late 13th century. A documentary mention confirms that inside this church there was a consecrated altar toSt Margaret.

The statue of St. Magareta attracted numerous pilgrims until 1530 and made Lengerich a place of pilgrimage. As the small 13th century church quickly became too small, it was rebuilt into today's late Gothic hall church.
