Beilmann House

Rheine

The Beilmannsche Haus is a very special building on the market square in Rheine. It is one of the few buildings that survived the attack of the Swedish general Königsmarck in the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648) almost intact. Today, only the seven cannonballs remain as a reminder that the town was almost completely destroyed.

The Beilmann house is also called "Markt 15" today.

History information

The Beilmann House is still a reminder of the cannon fire during the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648) by the Swedish General Königsmarck on 21 September 1647, during which the town of Rheine was almost completely destroyed. After the Peace of Westphalia was concluded in Münster and Osnabrück in 1648, the Beilmann House was one of the first buildings to be completely restored. It had suffered little damage compared to the other buildings. Even today, the seven cannonballs on the gable end and the inscription on the building are reminders of that cruel day.

The Beilmann House, also called "Markt 15", owes its name to a former owner - the master butcher Beilmann.
